Freedom 15-4

plywood kayak

This kayak is designed to a be a simple-to-build, yet functional recreational/light touring kayak to get you on the water quickly. Done properly in wood, this kayak will provide many hours of enjoyable paddling and the Freedom from ugly, mass produced plastic boats.

Stitch and glue kayak

The Freedom Kayak is ideal to paddle in calm to moderately windy and/or choppy conditions, for camping trips up to 5 days, casual paddling, recreational fishing, etc. It can easily swallow all the gear you see below with room to spare.

Kayak camping

The hull will be stable and be comfortable for a novice paddler to relax and stroke with ease. Generous flare will help slice through waves and reduce rocking motion. While the Freedom is not an outright touring kayak, it is much faster than a plastic recreational kayaks.

Cost:

Cost to build range from about $350 for a basic hull and up $1000 for an ultra light weight version.

The Freedom Kayak is easy enough for a beginner builder to draw and cut them selves. A builder who chooses to draw and cut out all the panels by hand can save around $200 over the cost of CNC cut kit.

However, if you want the best materials and they are not available in your local area, then the precut kit might be worth considering.

Labor:

The hull will required about 55-65 hours to complete. You can save about 10-15 hours with a precut kit. These times are rough estimates and will vary according to the skill of the builder. Please note these are "hands on" hours and do not include the time waiting for epoxy to cure.
