staining plywood

hi I have searched through all the pages in this q&c 13 pages 627 topics, searching for info on staining plywood . ok i have established that all staining of ply should be done before any epoxy is applied, so even before i join two panels butt join or scarfing i will be staining .
my question is regarding the various types of stain, ie water base , spirit base , oil base.
Lets delete oil base first .on samples of ply, water base is easy to apply,but i have not come up with a color that i like , spirit base has some excellent colors however "will epoxy adhere to a spirit based stain ???? my definition of spirit base is of a product that has a base of mineral turpentine/thinners or other .
any advice will be appreciated

Yep my advice is dont do it. Having used stain ,waterbased, it can cause problems.

has anyone tried laniline dyes on ply? I have used it on solid hardwoods and it gives colour like stain never could, it's also available in any coulour of the rainbow.

no I haven't but the unique thing about dyes is that they leave nothing behind except coloured wood. Stains however do leave behind surface changes (resins etc). They come in water soluble and alcohol as well. I used the alcohol based stuff. I can tell you that once dyed there is no solvent that I know of that can remove the colour.
If I still have some at home I'll try a little test piece this weekend and report back.
Another thought would be to add pigments to the epoxy itself, I have seen posts somewhere where someone did just that, it was orange if I remember right

I used some waterbase stain , everything went great for a while,then when the boat was in the sun blisters would pop up between the wood and glass. Hi heat seem to cause it ,I am talking from an inch to 3 inches across.

Thanks for your replys ,i have been doing some experiments myself and if i stain i will use a alcohol /spirit base. adding a dye to the resin would be too hard to achieve a constant uniform color.i will be fiber glassing some samples this morning so i will let you know how this works out ,i am confident there will be no adhesion problems.

I know of someone that has used this with beautiful results.
They are resistant to UV fading.
