Foot brace location
Foot brace location
I am currently working on a free laker from Matt. (Sorry Matt, but with layoffs and such this year, it was all I could do--May be a set of bpughten plans next year!) My question is location fromthe front edge of the seat board. This will be located at the panel splice. I"m thinking the front mounting screw should be about 33" in front of this edge, but would appreciate input by users. Thanks

Re: Foot brace location
That's what the free plans are there for: to get you started. By asking your question, you're starting a discussion that likely is of interest to at least 50 other builders or potential builders. That's the value you give back to the site.
One solution is to set up a mock cockpit and sit in it wearing the same type clothes and gear you'd expect to wear when paddling. Mark/measure the location of your toes with your legs and toes fully extended (knees locked and not bent). That's about the furthest the footpads will need to be. Plan for location on the hull accordingly.
You could also go out and sit in other plastic yaks and get a feel for where they locate the foot braces. Be sure to note distances as foot brace brands vary in size slightly.

Re: Foot brace location
I basically did the mock cockpit setup on the living room floor. Then had the wife try my locations to see if that measurement would work. But more information is always good--all the plastic yaks I know of around here are either standing on end in stores, or hung high in someones garage. Another ^" or so of the global warming white stuff, so I guess there's no real hurry!
