Finishing?
Finishing?
I recently picked up a 23 year old Merrimack. I just finished removing the old cracked varnish off the boat and want to refinish the wood. Is it recommended that I frst treat it with an oil of some type before I put varnish on it? I want it to shine but I am going to use this canoe also. thanks. 1st post

Wow the plans haven't been out that long!
Since you have an older wooden boat, I certainly don't want to steer you wrong. you could seal it with epoxy and then varnish it. Be sure to do a good job getting all old layer off first.
You could also use some sort of other finish. http://www.wcha.org has a forum with some great advice on refinishing classic canoes.
