JEM Watercraft

I see on the Sasquatch 14 plan that it is possible to build the canoe ultralight by using 3 mm (instead of 4 mm) plywood and 4 oz fiberglass (instead of 6 oz). Does anyone have experience with a canoe built like that? I would prefer ultralight and would be pretty careful in it's handling and use, but on the other hand I don't want it to be "flimsy". What about 4 mm plywood and 4 oz fiberglass? Would that be a little tougher?? Thanks in advance for answers// Bob

Since the Sasquatch has multi panels, you can use 3mm and have a study hull. That's what Chuck used in the above mentioned thread.

Besides being light ( 30 pounds) it is quite strong and not flimsy at all. I would rate it as very solid , as solid as any manufactured glass canoe I have ever had. It's just a ton lighter and nicer then any of them.

I built the Sasquatch 16.5' using 4mm Okoume - 6oz cloth on the outside and 3.25oz inside. Solid as a rock and weighs about 40 pounds (I think) certainly no heavier.

I don't baby my boats and this combination is more than up to my particular forms of abuse.
