Is the coaming on the Free Laker for show only or is it also for strength?

I also need to know where exactly does it go vertically; bottom flush to the edge of the deck, on top of the deck, mid way down into the deck, etc... .

It strengthens the deck and is required.

It's designed to rest on top of the deck.
