The ENO

Post by Mark J »

Matt, been awhile since we passed those productive emails back and forth in what wound up being the birth of the ENO.
I'm going to finally build the ENO and do it justice by almost exclusively using it on the Neuse river. For those not familiar the Eno river feeds Falls Lake and the outfall of Falls Lake becomes the Neuse. ( I don't think Matt wanted to call it the Neuse)

A little about the ENO and the top notch guy that is chief cook and bottle washer around here.
I was fresh out of a back surgery with fishing heavy on the mind.
I presented Matt with some criteria for a canoe or yak or a combination of both basicly modeled with the thought of an inexperienced paddler of a yak and ease of portage.
I was looking light, stable, able to carry my beer gut plus a cargo of cold ones and atleast another 100 pounds of gear and fish. Fish mainly
I claim absolutely no part of the conception of the ENO other then posing some questions to Matt and presenting him with a set of obstacles. He is the sole brain behind it.
Very quickly Matt answered those questions and hurdled obstacles and the ENO was born after a short gestation.
Without trying to sound like a car salesman, you dont find that kind of service many places.

As for me I've had ups and downs with the back and always will.
I've had alot of irons in the fire with a career and other ventures.
I've been working on an old teracatta tile tobacco barn on and off for 5 years but steadily by myself for the last couple of years in my free time.
Keep in mind I live on a huge farm in eastern NC. There is plenty of tractors but I have moved countless yards of dirt one shovel full at the time grading, regrading, changing grade, and final grading. It's been my therapy. The inside dimensions of the barn are roughly 17x21 and is the tool room. Outside is an L shaped shelter on 2 sides extending 16 feet out.

I poured 17 yards of concrete a week before Christmas and the next step is closing it all in, insulating it , and climate controlling the whole thing.
I've got a 10 foot working height inside and out and putting a living quarters above the tool room for friends to use as they travel through or to me for some hunting, fishing, or boat building.
Its complete with a refrigerator that houses two full kegs of beer , one Guinness , one ShinerBock with taps on the door. A little crookedness in a boat adds character.
It's the boat building barn properly named Therapy.
She isnt in my backyard. She is across the road nestled down in the bottom of a field in the edge of the woods viewable by only and targeted frequently by the fighter wing out of Seymour Johnson AFB. She is hid real good. A still would prove to be more lucrative in this setting.

I've got a complete rebuild of a 24' pontoon going on for the Cape Fear river but the first actual build in this haven of mine is going to rightfully be the ENO. I should get started in a few short weeks.
Nothing fancy or showy but finished well. I'm chasing 40+ pound flatheads with her not gals.
I've fell in love with the Freedom yak. boat #2?

Matt, my hats off to you.
I'll supply the pictures you requested..

G'day Mark, and welcome back mate.

Real glad things are starting to come together for you too. :D

When I first discovered this fine site and the genius that is Matt, Eno very nearly became my first build for many of the reasons you stated, only here in Aus. She is still calling me and I will build one one day if ever I can catch up with all the other lovely boats of Matt's that I want to build.

Looking forward to your piccies and your build. 8)
Regards,
Mick
