got my plans yesterday and will begin in a few days. I do a lot of off-shore fishing and would like your oppinion on the capabilities of this boat. Max hp rating, speed , average chop that can routinly and safely be navigated. Realy like the design of the boat and the room it offers.

The 21 flex garvey does look like a good fishing boat. Morten is the guy to answer your questions obviously but I believe it can handle engines up to 90hp.

The 21' Garvey flex is designed for the off-shore fishing and sailing. So I do not have any doubt it will be a boat suitable for your needs. The boat is designed to stand up to the weather and sea you will experience when going off-shore and it is a strong construction with longitudinal stringers and transverse frames. Furthermore I have made the boat as safe as possible with plenty of room for flotation and the possibility for a self bailing deck is also present.

Max. hp is 90 hp. With a 90 hp outboard you will be able to run somewhere between 28-32 kn., depending on the amount of gear and number of persons onboard.

I am also considering building the 21' Garvey flex next winter. (no time in the summer - just boating).
Just a question for for Morten: "...the possibilitya self bailing deck is also present." Do you have to make any adjustments to get a self bailing deck ?

I like that Garvey Flex. If I ever build me a power boat, it'll probably be that one.

Normally you would have freeing ports in your bulwark to drain the water away from the deck. On the 21' Garvey flex you do not have a bulwark so you have to make the freeing ports in the side plating. Therefore I would suggest having self-opening (and closing) freeing ports if there is a possibility that you would go out in heavy sea. There is of course a sump for a bilge pump, but if the waves are large and wash over the boat you can not be sure the pump will do the job fast enough. Therefore the freeing ports would be a good idea.

It is no problem making self-opening freeing ports yourself, it is actually quite easy. I will make an addition to the plans for that option.

Another thing to have in mind when talking about the self-bailing deck is that the system would not work if the boat gets too heavy loaded. The displacement would have to be kept below 1400 kg [3086 lbs] because the bailing will not work if the deck is below the water line.

I really like this plan, However I must ask a couple questions before I order the plans... 1. Can it be extended to 23 or 24' without much problem? 2. Instead of a center pilot house I would like a side to side pilot house, in other words, a door in front and a door in back Centered. Pilot seat one side passenger the other , Say at least 6' long Near centered of the boat..... Reason, I am a winter Catfisherman that is looking to get out of the wind,rain,snow.......and have a bit of heat.... able to pop out any door to get a rod that has been slammed by a big blue cat. Is this feasable? I have built one plywood boat for experience and rebuilt another larger boat. I have the experience an skills necessary to complete this mission. Thanks...... Mac
