North Wind

What is the clearence from the bottom to the deck , along with the side to side (inside) measurment of both the South and North Wind.

Reason I am asking is I would like to know if a waterproof dry pack of the 3,600 sq inch size would fit under there , both bow and stern , since I take two with me on river trips.

Size ... (9"D x 16"W x 25"H) 3,600 cu. in. 9 and 16 are in question since they would not be standing up the 25 inches but laying down.

I like to have the bags forward of me and behind me , in the canoe they are almost up to the bow and stern.

Short explanation.....

One bag is the bedroom , all the stuff for sleeping and the other is the clothing and necessities , meds , adult beverage and the rest of the comfort items.

The food container with everything for cooking is right back of the seat , the chair in anyplace it will fit. The water jugs forward and aft in the confined spaces the bags don't fill up.

I guess my question is ... will the bags fit under the decking and how far do you think they would go under the decking. Specifficaly thinking about the North-wind. South-wind as a 2nd choice.

North, just forward of cockpit, 22.4" wide x 14" deep. Just aft: 23.8" wide x 13.5 deep.

South, just forward: 22.8, 13.5". Aft: 23" x 13"

Looks like you'd have room and then some.

Mate, My Southwind and Sasquatch will do all that I could ever ask for in big canoes. I have raved long and loud about both of them. If they were not such superb boats, each in its own right, be sure, the plans for a Northwind would allready be in my grubbly little paws. I am badly tempted to build a Northwind, just because I can but for now, my passion is with smaller, simpler boats.

Should Matt ever decide to design a south wind at around 14' or 15' X 24" or so, - now that is something to dream about. If I can ever catch up with all the other boats that I want to build, be sure I will be asking for a custom job in this regard.

Gentlemen however I may have upset you I was in no way passing disparaging comments on the icon that is Verlen Kruger. However I was also referencing the great Percy Blandford who designed and built canoes for the scouting organisation throughout the world. As for my own experiences that using a single blade or twin any Kayak, as you call them over 15 feet long will benefit from a rudder.

If Matt wants to design a rudder this doesn’t mean we all have to fit one, that’s the point of democracy and the constitutional right of most societies.
Once again I apologise if I have ruffled a few feathers at this festive time. For those that want to try it out keep watching for Matts input.

I don't think anyone was miffed. If they were, I certainly missed it.

I'll get that rudder design posted. Looks to be simple and effective. Verlen's rudder was like that as well. Made from piano hinge and stop-sign aluminum. Everything could be bought at a hardware store.

Plenty of arguments can be made for or against a rudder. They are nice to have. When I paddled the Sea Wind, it made all the difference in the world.

But on an extended trip, better have a back-up plan in case it breaks.
