Gunwales going on today.

I'm attaching gunwales 3mm above sheerline so that decks will sit flush against top of gunwales, sanding in a rounded outer edge.

Now, a question.
I'm using 20 x 12mm pine (Edit...Aagh, I mean 30 x 12 mm) for the gunwales. Would that be suitable for the stringers also?
I'm anticipating using the stringers as an attachment point for the seat which will probably be one of those ones that use clips on straps to hold in place and maintain the upright position of the back support........ I hope you can visualise the one I mean...... I'll try finding a photo of one
I would need to affix hooks or eyes to the stringer as a clip on point.

Stringers? You building the SOT or sit inside version?

Hi Matt.
Building Sit In version........ Just looked back through plans and realise they are not mentioned in there.......had got myelf confused somewhere along the line......
However I'd been thinking of adding them anyway for the (percieved?) added strength/stiffness. This is probably just a touch of paranoia after the destruction of a previously built canoe.
Or perhaps I'm using the wrong term......what I mean is lengths of timber running along the internal length of the boat at floor level or just above.......
Also figured that their inclusion would provide more convenient attachment points for the seat as mentioned. Added weight would be minimal
Your thoughts?

Oh ok. Like adding a seat platform.

Here's what I'd do: Build it and take her a short test run then decide if you want the internal framing. That pine sounds pretty heavy duty so it will definitely do the trick.

You building with 4mm Gaboon?

If so, I think you will find the boat will be plenty strong and gijid as it is. Like Matt said, try her first mate.

No worries Mick. I just had a look at it in your Laker log.
I've got the idea now.....thanks.
I'm using Hoop Pine Marine Ply.......it was the only type available locally at the time... Not sure how it compares to Gaboon but seems ok.

Looking great snap, haf to say the Cape Fear is definitely on the list for me. Have always liked the shape and almost tried it as a first build, but am pleased to say I'll let you find any hassles with it; save me fixing mine

Let me know if you want more detail mate.

Re the hoop pine ply, I think it would probably be even stronger than gaboon. Once you get her glassed inside and out, with the decks, bulkheads etc. on, I think you will be surprised at just how strong it is.
