MIMCRO BALLS OR WOOD FLOUR

Post by danmull »

HIYA ALL!!! well acording to the honolulu post office my WF plans should be here in the morning. I have some micro ball fillet material left over from a proguie build I did. Was wondering if its as good as wood flour to use. The WF will be made in duplicate for me and my son. Surf gets a little ruff here and I can't seem to find out the strength difference between the two. Any advise fellas? If wood flour is better a have to special order it to hawaii

the micro balls your refer to... are they a redish purple? They are referred to as micro ballons if we talking about the same thing.

For a kayak, micro ballons can be used as filler (I researched and also got that straight from the System Three tech guys.)

Be warned the color strain the wood very easily.

Adding wood flour to epoxy, changes the consistency of the epoxy, (makes it thicker) so that it will pretty much stay a fillet shape when you create them.

Adding micro balloons, increases the volume of the epoxy, without adding extra weight.

You may have to add ALOT of micro balloons to get the epoxy to the correct consistency to form fillets, if it ever does. And like Matt mentioned, purplish stains are likely.

G'day Danmull,

I don't know anything about the micro balloons but if you have a cabinet maker's shop nearby, I would suggest you call in and ask for a bag of their sandings from their dust extraction.

It is all wood flour is. I would also sift it before using it to get any big bits out.

good luck mate.

Mick

DM brings up a point I forgot to mention: Getting the right mix using micro ballons is not easy as compared to wood flour.

As Mick said, find a woodshop that has some fine saw dust that is clean, and you have your woodflour. They'll probably give you more than you'll ever use.

The boat shop probably has cabosil which works just as well as woodflour, but is white in color.

Mate, ask around.

I would bet there is a hobby wood-worker on the island somewhere. Once you find him, you will have an unlimited supply of the stuff.
