Professor builds a Sunfish

Hi Everyone

I have a wife and two boys, so smaller watercrafts are all but out of the question, but I did come across these plans for a cabin cruiser, http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=CabinCruisers/SunFish and I wanted to get your opinons on it before I start investing in the materials.

I'm mostly interested in what materials would be better used in place of materials listed, these plans were drawn up almost 40 years ago and I would think that there are better materials that can be used. Also, if anyone has suggestions on structural improvements, I'd be more than happy to hear them.

You could build the boat S&G, taking advantage of fiberglass and epoxy. Then you could also leave out the chine lock, keel and keelson, which are difficult elements to get right.

If you are using S&G I would also recommend using plywood for the frames and other structural elements. Gluing wood with epoxy and fiberglass can be a doubtful joint if you don’t have fully control of the moisture content in the wood.

Thank you for the input Morten. Actually I looked around on your site and I'm really liking the 17' motorboat, I think it would suit my family's needs (wants) very well.
