G'day Louis,

I think kanduli might be what we call a catfish. Did it have barbed spine in the doral and pectoral fins?

I think I have heard some Philopenas call them that out here.

We have a pretty big population of ex-pats living in this area.

I think a canoe paddle is more suitabe for your boat.

Re the kids swimming. it would be a very good idea to at least drown proof them. Especially since they love the canoe and the water so much. Living in the tropics is a bonus.

Louis,

Each paddler develops their own preferences and styles. I find a kayak paddle to be ultimately useful in all paddling conditions I'm in. I can get MUCH more paddle in the water to fight a head wind; I can brace against a capsize quicker; I can go faster or slower as I prefer; I can turn much more powerfully with bow or stern rudder strokes; etc.

Works good for me; others like a single blade paddle. (Darned if I can figure why.)

Thanks Jack. Actually the wife already asked me to make her a double paddle. I have to admit though I one of those who like a single blade paddle for what reason I have no idea

We do it that way, because that's the way we do it. Don't need to explain it, Louis; just do it. My "logical" reasons for liking a double blade may be just rationalization.

There is a very good article in the current Sea Kayaker Magazine by Brian Day.

It puts into words very well, some of the reasons the legendary Verlen KRUGER preferred the single blade. It also articulates much better than I can, why I preferr the single blade.

More and more, I find myself leaving my beautiful, feathered, assymetrical blade kayak paddle at home and using a single blade, canoe paddle on ALL of my boats.
