First go at a pirogue

Hello fellas heres a few pics(i hope!!!) of my first go

My first mistake was to put a butt joint on the wrong side

but i got that sorted and its going ok now???

hope that works!!!!! im a bit of a ludite on computers

Mick - you stole the words right out of my mouth. When doing a stitch and glue, and those first two panels along the keel line start to curl up at the stem ends, I grin like a brand new Daddy, and say, "It's a BOAT!"

I got a go at filleting today ,as its all new to me its a bit on the rough side but im really enjoying the learning curve.thanks for all the encoragement cheers zeb.

P.S. I called them three sheets of ply HER today

When you do the filleting ..... Epoxy saturate the wood about 2 or three inches on each side. When that has set up then lightly sand it ... This gives the masking tape something to stick to and when you pull it it will not pull the wood making a mess.

After you put the tape down where you want it ... the fillet will be in the open area between the two strips of tape and just before it sets up then pull the tape. It will get rid of the spill over and make for a lot less sanding.
Make sure you pull the tape before the fillet sets up , if you don't then you will have a problem

They would look like this before sanding when they are done.

Thanks for the advice Chuck,Ididnt even mask it

Cadged the wood flour from a local joinery firm ,it looked really light in colour until i mixed it!!!Would it be better to stain the ply with a dark wood dye now or use a dark varnish later. cheers zeb

You could stain it now but be sure it's a water-based stain.

I once got a hold of some mahogany woodflour figuring it would match the wood. Nope!

WAAAAAAAAY darker.
