Type of boat I like: Trapper designs

4' sections

Post by ralphobarly »

Hello everyone,

I just decided to make my first venture into a stitch and glue boat. I purchased the plans for the trapper canoe and can't wait for them to arrive. Fishing season starts soon haha. I have one question, however. I am trying to hunt down the best ply I can find ( for the best price of course .) I am basically looking at Luann or Meranti. I have to find ply without the .5 mm of veneer on the outside because I am not planning on glassing the hull. I have a 2 part polyurethane paint left over from another job that I will be using. I'm afraid that if I use ply with the .5 mm veneer and don't glass, that the veneer will delaminate. The thing is they vary grade so much from hardware store to hardware store. Long story short, I ended up finding some really nice 5mm ply that is 3 equal sections ( or ply's ) with no veneer on the outside for $13.00 a sheet! So here's the catch though. It was in 4' sections ( or half sheets ). So I picked up 6 half sheets anyway ( each half sheet was $6.50) without thinking if the design for the trapper could be completed with splicing 4 pieces of 4' plywood together instead of the standard two 8' pieces. So there is my query. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much

Sounds like 3 splices in every panel instead of 1. It should be doable, in theory.

it's not the ideal situation. Especially with the bottom panels have a 90 degree twist. How's the quality of the wood? How thick?
