I have no doubt that in shallow water a kayak paddle is the only option. What I was thinking was something like the Trinity race where it is all deep water. You and I have been in enough shallow water together where you just dig that paddle in on each side and keep going. Then if all else fails you use as a push pole.
Kinda like the boats we build, they are meant to be used.

Verlen just believed a single blade required less overall movement which he deemed more efficient. Not sure if there is science to back that up.
