Shortened panels

Post by Nigel »

I'm just about to start drawing up a DK touring canoe but the only size plywood I could buy is 2.4m long (about 94 1/2 inches) instead of the 2.44m or 96 inches specified.

Can I ask for advice on the best way to go with panels this size please?

That's a tough one. Frustrating it's only 1.5".

Only thin I can think to do without really complicated it is to splice 1.5" to edge of the panel. not the prettiest solution. Sorry.

If you're going to paint, what would be wrong with 'tilting' the reference line a few inches so that the panel fits on the sheet of ply? True, the grain won't be horizontal, if if you're going to paint, it won't matter and if you're not, it'll hardly be noticed.

Do the panels require the entire 96 inch length? 94.5 might be long enough. I don't know about Morten, but the two of Matt's designs that I have built the panels have been a little shorter than the plywood.

You should be OK with this length it's just that some of the reference marks and measurements are done from the "other end". You'll have to be real careful transcribing those measurements.

my advice...

build another shorter boat
