Flat bottom vs Vee???

Post by slider »

For those who may have tried similar boats boats with the diff bottoms (such as the Touring Pirogue and the TV)- is there a noticeable difference? What do you like/don't like about one versus the other?

From what I have read I think the flat bottom may get pushed around slightly more in the wind and may not track quite as well, but I'm not really sure how much in either case.

Slider I have both and there is a tremendous difference in speed or ease of paddling, tracking is great in the T-V you want believe the difference.

One more seam is well worth it.,Darrel paddled my Cuda and owns a perow ask him
Also the T-V is asymetrical

Thanks for the feedback.

I have started on a touring pirogue and have all pieces cut, but the reason I asked is I am thinking I would like the v better. Not too late at this point to cut bottom piece down the center and do some mods to the length of the side pieces and make a regular touring pirogue (no tumblehome) but with a v bottom :?

I have almost convinced myself for certain this is the way I want to go.

You could do it by eye. How deep of a V do you want? Let me take a quick look.

I was thinking 2" in the center would do, but I am totally guessing and open to suggestions.

I have cut my sides and bottom, but have not cut the bottom in half. To complicate it, I did scale down the length by reducing my lines on the board to be 19.25" apart instead of 24". The max width of the bottom is also only 24". Then when cutting the sides I left all of the height measurements alone.

I think I would be comfortable figuring out the sides, etc if someone would reccommend the amount of V. I was thinking I would have it 2' in the center at midships, but not sure and also not sure if that should remain constant end to end, but that's what I'm thinking about.

Thinking about it further, I didn't consider how to accommodate rocker by just splitting the bottom in half and leaving everything else the same.

Reason I picked regular touring pirogue anyway is this will be my first build and I wanted to keep it simple. Perhaps my best bet is to continue building with only the minimum mods I have already made to size and at most add a keel strip underneath instead of worry about the V.

After I have this under my belt, I can always buy plans for a TV and build that, as I understand it, you can't build just one... :D .

G'day Slider,

Build your Touring Pirogue as drawn mate. Like Matt said, way more trouble than it is worth to go changing now and the Touring Pirogue is a great boat in its own right.

Mick
