Dk 18 touring canoe modifications

Post by Jee »

Hi,

Thank you for the plans.

Is there a way i can reduce the height of the freeborads?

Or more precisely the height of the bow and stern.

On the top panels:

1st idea:keep the base as usual but have the height of the panel 21,7cm all along.

2nd idea: Keep the base as usual. Mark the top panel at midbow and draw a straight (slanted) line to the top end of the other side.

About modifications:
I d like the canoe to be less prone to catch winds
Fore money concerns and easy access of materials i will build her from steel sheets.
I may add stabilizers.
I may add a small polling platform at the stern
I may add a small casting platform at the bow.
I may cut the stern to install a longtail 3hp motor.

Feeling like being a kind a hair in the soup  but thank you in advance for any constructive comments.

Wow that's a lot of modifications! But it is your boat.

I'm not sure how steal would do. I just don't have the knowledge.

But but can reduce the sheer height easy enough. Here's what I propose:

1) Lay everything out as draw on some cheap plywood and position the panels as if you were getting ready to splice them together. Maybe do this on a long wooden table or bench, then screw the panels into place.

2) put a nail at the heights you want on the ends, then one in the middle.

3) get batten...which is a term for a long piece of woodworking trim, PVC tube, anything that is long and flexible. You might have to scarf a couple pieces together to enough length.

4) clamp to the end nails and then flex it and clamp to the middle nail. Trace that curve and you'll have your new height and have a nice, smooth, fair curve.
