I have been speaking with bruce back channel and he has just purchased the plans for the new Okwata . As word of this magnificent new design spreads, I am confident that many more of these boats will be built here.
Bruce comes from far north Queensland (croc country) but also has access to some truly remarkable paddling country and I think you have made the right choice mate.
Please share with us your build adventures and post lots of piccies.
Thanks for the welcome Mick and Mat,
My ply arived yesterday and I think it is closer to 3mm than 4mm, I did not check it untill I came home as it was raining and did not want to get it wet, I will use it (I have orded it from Brisbane, 1200ks from here). Can I use a heavy cloth to make the strength up, I do not plan on giving the boat a hard time.

I was going to use 3mm and glass inside and out with 4 oz cloth, with an additional layer on just the hull bottom for abrasion resistance and was told that this would be ok. Unfortunately, the hardwood importer here, as of this week, only carries 4mm and thicker okuome. Last week they had 3mm for $15 a sheet cheaper than the 4mm.
Hi Craig,
Thank you for the info. I was guessing it would be ok but is always better to ask, and I did not know wat cloth was ok, am hoping to start soon (I have more urgent jobs, I am told) I am hoping to do some of them but it has been rainging every day (from 26/12/08)so is taking time to finish.
