Flotation

Post by Darrells »

I want to install some flotation under my decks ( I would like to do it like you would do an end pour of epoxy). Is there a product that can be mixed and poured? Several people have told me to stay away from regular expandable foam (like the cans you get at Lowes) because they will eventually absorb water and become waterlogged.

they do make 2-part urethane expanding marine flotation foam. Be VERY careful pouring into an enclosed space. It expands with quite a bit of force. I popped a seam on a rowboat I built doing that very same thing.

you want the 2-pound density for flotation purposes.

Float bags or pool noodles are a nice alternative.

Thanks Matt. I read up on this product and intend on only about 1 cubic foot in the front of each deck, kinda like an epoxy end pour. I will make several small pours so as to not blow the deck off . My thinking is in case of a catastrophic problem at least you could stay with the boat until you can safely reach the shore.

it's a nice bit of insurance to have. And good idea on doing a bunch of small pours. Save yourself some heart-ache later.
