Calculating oar length

Post by davaodan »

I am building a S&G 12 ft. rowboat, with a 4 foot beam; one of Morten Olesen's designs. He seems to be taking some time off sailing. Can anyone advise me on what length of oar to use for this boat?

This is what it will look like I hope. The oarlocks are a bit aft of the widest measurement. I am 6'1". It should be about 11" freeboard from the oarlock to the water. I am thinking they should be between 7.5 and 8 ft. I have fairly long arms, no experience in rowing and am 64 years young.

Do any of you have any advice to offer about balancing the oars or anything else I should know? I am not really interested in cross-handed rowing.

I am documenting the build in Boatplans.dk
