? about boat styles.

Post by bronco302 »

Hello from East Tennessee.
I’ve been looking and reading for several days and have quite a few questions. I
guess I should start with a bit about me and my intended use of one of these watercraft.
Ok I’m 51 in reasonably good health although I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I have no paddling experience other than trying out some plastic boats at local demo days. Please don’t raise the eye brows to high I will be using all needed safety equipment and lean toward planning for the worse. I’m six feet tall and weight 260# fully dressed for work, I’m a plumber. As for use, 95% of the time I’ll be using the boat in the French Broad river below Douglas Dam but not all the way to Knoxville to many big boats when you close to the river front. I don’t plan to be on the river when they are running more than one or two of the four generators. Under these conditions the Broad in very tame. As for gear to be hauled I will not be doing camping trips that I can’t take along the camper I’m building http://www.mikenchell.com/forums/album_ ... er_id=5911 .
My trips will for the most part be Saturday morning decompression times. I’ll have a couple of bottles of water, a peanut butter sandwich, one fishing rod, and my tackle box will fit in a pocket. If I hit any of the local lakes I’ll won’t be striking out across them but working coves near where ever I put in. I have pretty good woodworking skills and can do pretty much anything I set my mind to. Also building a boat will be its own form of decompression.

I’ll not pile a lot of questions in one post so to start I’ll ask for some thoughts on the following boats. Tell me how you feel about stability for a novice and how they build. From looking the details on each I like the Eno best for my first boat, but also like the Touring Pirogues. I can do a sixteen foot boat in my shop with out tearing out some of my work bench but it would be tight getting around the ends. Also I feel the shorter boat would be easier to just grab and run for the river with. Thanks for all your thoughts. Thanks Matt for these lovely plans. Thanks for all of you just being around as I venture into the decompression zone.

Eno would be a nice open boat to start with as a first time build. I'd also take a look at the Iroquois 14.
