dk touring canoe
hello been watching this forum waiting for a chance to build the dk. Now that i'm getting close to building and needing to clean the garrage lol. I have a few ?. First in the plans i can't seem to find the reference marks for the bracea and bulk heads wondering if i'm missing something in the plans. Second is it ok to stain the wood panels with a water based stain before assembly? I have mocked up the canoe with cardboard and have changed the plans to a 16 footer instead of 18 took the center panels and choped 2 foot out of the middle of them to change plans hope this will work when transfering the plans to wood. Any tips would be appreciated my wife thinks i'm nuts and I will sink lol.

Are you talking aout the chopped strand mat? If so, you can use it but it will soak up a LOT more resin and your boat will wind up waaaaaay heavier than it needs to be.
I would go to the expense of buying proper cloth mate. you will save more in the price of epoxy that you don't use to properly wet out the mat., Your boat will also be prettier and lighter.

If you haven't already started stop.
I have just completed a DK ('cause it was free) and although I've learned a lot had I the hindsight I would have bought the plans for one of Matts smaller canoes.
Why?
Cause it's smaller and you use less material.
As a beginner I've used 50% more resin than I should (but I learned what to do better next time)
You are considering making it smaller (I hope that works for you) I'd spend $40 for the Iroquois plans it's a sheet a ply and 40% less resin and it'll save you the heartache.
I'm also struggling to get the damn thing on the car to the water my cars too short and my roof racks too narrow.
but hey I enjoyed myself and I'm looking forward to the next build...
OK you can start again now
have fun

Sage advice Tor
,
This is a very big canoe by any standards that I understand.
The cost of your plans (if you choose to buy) will be the CHEAPEST PART OF THE BOAT
Did you opt for the DK because you particularly like the lines of her or just because the plans were free?
If you haven't allready started cutting your ply, have a look at some of these, in no particular order,
Buccaneer,
Eno
Iroquois
Merrimac.
Swamp Girl
and especially this one,
Townsend
http://www.jemwatercraft.com/proddetail ... d=Townsend
Any of these boats will be an easier build than the DK, requiring less ply and fibreglass and resin making them WAY CHEAPER TO BUILD IN THE LONG RUN
I particularly recommended the Townsend because of its classic and uncomplicated lines, relative ease of build. This boat will do all that you would normally require from a canoe and much more. please consider

Thanks for all the advice. I have allready started cutting the panels. No i didn't dicide on the dk because it was free. I decided on it because it reminded me of a canoe that the family had when i was a child. I allso have three children and a wife to put in it with me. (after the wife relizes that it isn't going to sink lol)My one problem is there isn't anyplace local to pick anything up and ordering from online sources don't work to well around here ups doesn't deliver here because it isn't a confirmed address. The usps here just sucks we have to go to the post office to get our mail if you recieve a large item in your mail they put a note in your box becuse the package will not fit in postoffice box and if you don't pick it up in 3 days they send it back to sender there is were the problem starts post office is closed when we get off work and isn't open when we go to work we can get our mail from box put nothing from inside post office then on saturdays they are only there to put mail in boxes witch sucks. They do not do mail delivery here. To go to anywhere that has stores big enough to buy much it is 40 dollars in gass to get there and wife about shot me when i went and spent 40 dollars in gas to go get plywood for the build. Witch she about shot me for the price of that to.
