Pirogue in Process

Unfortunately, I too have started to build a boat. The way everyone talks I should start looking for storage space because you just can't build one.

Anyway, I have a question on glassing the hull. Right now the sheet of fiberglass is laying on hull waiting...... I am not sure if I need to cover the bare hull with epoxy and before dry lay on the fiberglass, or on dry hull lay fiberglass and then epoxy. Also, any tips on gunwale construction, and tips on outfitting. Thanks for the help..

Which model are you building?

I find it easiest to lay the cloth on dry, then use a foam roller to apply the epoxy like you would paint. Work from in the inside area of the cloth out to the ends.

the old 14-29 Pirogue, she looks pretty good so far. Simple boat so for something to go wrong, it has to be major. I brought up outfitting, I was interested in everyone creative ways to customize a boat, I will fish, fly-fish with it, I was thinking rod holders, tackle trays, beverage holder, stuff like that. I'll get pictures out eventually... Thanks

G'day Paddlehard and welcome aboard mate!

I think you have chosen well for your first build and Matt's pirogues are superb fishing boats.

Have a look at some of my build threads. they might give you some ideas re rigging your boat.

Re fibreglassing, Either way works fine. i prefer to apply a coat of resin to the ply before attempting wet out. I find it a little easier that way.

Re gunnwhales, Roughly, where are you from? If from the US, others can help better than I. If from Aus, I would recommend clear Hoop Pine. Light weight, strong and beautiful stuff to use. What ever you decide to use, try to get light weight stuff.
